So for the handful of (un)lucky few who managed to get ahold of their pacemaker with special limited edition numbers etched into the backplate, most of you will now have realized that the number had scratched off and has ceased to exist, however, all is not lost.

As you may have noticed, the laser etching detailing your unique Premiere Edition number on the back of your Pacemaker is fading. This daunting effect is due to insufficient testing of the laser etching technique in combination with the exclusive Pacemaker coating. Nevertheless, this is certainly as upsetting as it is unacceptable and we are, of course, committed to rectifying this problem.

To remedy this unfortunate flaw, we’d like to offer you the opportunity to let us mount a new back piece onto your device with your Premiere Edition number printed with enhanced silk screen print technique.

This option will be available upon request between 27th of June - 11th of July. We’ll arrange with pick-up at your preferred address and return your Pacemaker to the same address. This procedure is of course free of charge but will take up to four weeks to complete.

We’ll send you a 50 USD Beatport gift card regardless of whether you choose to replace your back piece or not.

Kindly let us know if you want your back piece replaced by replying to this e-mail within the given time frame above and we shall sort you out promptly.

We wholeheartedly apologize for this inconvenience,

/ Pacemaker team

I for one am keen to take advantage of this and have my Pacemaker re-etched, after all it is a part of DJing history, and technical innovation.

The Hoerboard, is basically a DJ deck stand, but its at the highest end of the spectrum, pratically custom made, its designed to fit a range of DJ equiment and is designed to make all your Dj equipment sit flush with the mix table, there are various models to choose from and various materials and layouts to make the DJ mix table sit comfortably with the rest of your furnature, whether you be a club DJ or a bedroom DJ with mney to burn, interestingly, the cabling your DJ equipment has, is embedded into the actual DJ mix table itself, meaning that its doesn’t get in the way and people don’t end up tripping on your cables and cutting your DJ set short, if you Dj with a laptop or even a Pacemaker, special stands that clip on to the Hoerboard can be made to measure, as such it looks cool, and works well…a winning combination in my books.

Calculating Pitch is dead easy, but a necessary skill for DJing, whilst some DJs will say that you can adjust pitch of music by ear, it can sometimes be less hassle and simpler to calculate pitch by ear.

simply count the number of beats for 10 seconds, multiply this by 6 and you have the beats per minute, this is what calculating pitch is in a DJing sense.

number of beats in 10 seconds x60 = Beats per minute.

Really however this calculates the tempo of the music or the speed of the beats, why its important for a DJ in terms music and a mix is that when the pitch of a music track is altered, by changing the speed of the rotation, so is the tempo and the beats per minute, both of which directly affect the music when beatmatching

The long awaited Mix save functionality will be released in a software upgrade available in the beginning of May. Here is what’s in the release:

- Mix save functionality; save your DJ sets and transfer them to the Editor.
- Mix playback; save mixes on the Editor and transfer them to Pacemaker, filter on mixes for playback as ordinary playlists. For the next release you will be able to playback mixes on your device as they were created on the device and/or Editor.
- Assorted bug fixes: freeze problems, display timeout and user interface improvements.

Hopefully Pacemaker have taken in all the various issues DJs have been buzzing round the forums with, these should act to help the Pacemaker become truly impressive, which is a great thing, and with the summer months coming, there even more reason to get the Pacemaker working…DJing in the park has never been easier.

You’ll need:
- a Laptop
- some DJ software
- a MIDI controller
- a sound card

To DJ music on a laptop, you’ll need to also consider the kind of laptop you want. first, for a laptop for DJing music you need to consider if you want a Mac or a PC. You’ll find that Macs are better designed to cope with the processing power need to run Music and DJ programs. PCs however are good for DJ beginners as they are cheaper and so are the music and DJing programs for them. Here are the pro’s and con’s to DJing on either platform.

Mac:
Pros:

dead easy to use

very very stable operating system (good for DJing)

all the new macs have hardware specs the meet the requirements of DJ software

good battery life

reasonably durable

long lifespan (new models don’t come out every month, but rather every few years)

con’s

expensive

OS system requires different software to PCs

As you can see there are more benefits to DJing on a Mac, particularly one that is designed to DJ music. To DJ on a mac, you’ll need to keep an eye on the specs: you’ll need a 1GHz processor at least and at least 1 GB of RAM, a hard drive of around 80GB and above is preferable although if you have an iPod that can act as an external hard drive. The best place to look for a mac to DJ music on is Mac Warehouse. In terms of Mac models good for DJing on the following are great to DJ Music with: any of the desktops, the Black Mac Book, any of the Mac Book Pro’s, and the Mac book Air. If you’re running on 1GB RAM you’ll ideally want to increase this to 2GB RAM for DJing.

DJing on a PC is a good alternative to those of yu on a tight budget or if you already have a high quality laptop, PCs are designed for mass market and may not have some of the features that are ideal fo DJing on, as such you need to be more selective and know what you want, it often helps to get some advice, lucky for you the DJ Music team will have reviews of the various Laptops the are good for DJing music on.

PC:

Pro’s

cheap

easy to buy

software cheaper to buy

hardware compatible

con’s

fragile

may not match up to specs

frequent new models come out

PCs are designed as a general all use machine so in order for a DJ to begin DJing on a PC, you first need to find a PC that meets the minimum standards of 2GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive and fast Pentium 2 processor, these are the bare minumum specs for DJing on a PC, obviously the more the better. Because PCs are so common, you can find special laptops designed for DJing, these DJ laptops are often worth the extra cost as they will have special features made to cope with DJing music. You’ll probably find that these DJing laptops are well worth checking out Dolphin Music Digital DJ System 001, 15.4″ Red Sub Audio Laptop, Toshiba Satellite Pro A200-1PN 15.4″, all these are designed for DJing and accomodate the music playing demands of a DJ.

additional components

To DJ on a laptop you’ll probably need a few extra bits, although you could get away with DJing on an out of the box laptop like the DJ laptops above, it will make your mixing easier and your DJing better by considering some additional tools. Some of these tools will be useful when DJing live, some will improve the quality of the music and some will help make it easier to DJ in a digital format.

It just goes to show the Pacemaker really know what their doing and really respect their customers and target audience, I can see loads of lager companies that could learn a lesson or two from the performance of Pacemaker, and I for one will definitely continue to be a loyal customer if their sterling performance continues.

After a few weeks with the Pacemaker, I must say I’m still really chuffed, there was a handful of times when it crashed, but considering its new, thats to be expected and I think future software upgrades will help this. This being said I’ve been thinking about what would be good for future upgrades

I’m keen to see the addition of more sophisticated effects and definitely a storage for multiple loops. I’d also love to get a case for the Pacemaker, after all its not exactly the cheapest of players. Perhaps even some custom headphones. (more pacemaker aticles by DJ music here)

One thing that irritates me is the strap that comes with the pacemaker, perhaps a branded or cooler strap would be a nice addition, plain black nylon seems a tab bit…bland. I’d also like to see some protective ’skins’ like those by Gela skin for the Pacemaker, to customize the design on the Pacemaker, even engraving would be great.

One thing I’d also like is backup parts, considering how much use my Pacemaker gets, I wouldn’t be surprised if sooner or later I’ll need to replace buttons and what not, I’d like spares of these Pacemaker parts made available and some sort of repair service as well.

I guess this is a primitive home made version of an MPC, however this looks more dramatic and potentially due to the layout could help scratch DJs with an additional tool they can use, mid scratch.

With the initial less than perfect but still warmly welcomed launch of the Pacemaker Portable DJ device the gadget freaks at Pacemaker have just announced another upgrade for the Pacemaker software, this should help clear up many of the exisitng glitches that have made DJing on the Pacemaker a little bit of a bother, and should provide Pacemaker DJs with more functionality…slowly slowly step by step, we’re getting there, personally I still love the Pacemaker.

So whats in the release for May?

• Mix save functionality; save your DJ sets and transfer them to the Editor.
• Mix playback; save mixes on the Editor and transfer them to Pacemaker, filter on mixes for playback as ordinary playlists. For the next release you will be able to playback mixes on your device as they were created on the device and/or Editor.
• Assorted bug fixes: freeze problems, display timeout and user interface improvements.

Check out the Pacemaker portable Dj Device.

If you plan on DJing on a laptop then you need to consider a few things before going out any buying a DJ laptop, these factors affect your Djing, music quality and costs.

First you want to consider the size of your Dj laptop- size affect portability and screen size, if the screen size is too small you might have challenges looking at and menipulating your DJ programs.

consider the size of the DJ laptops hard drive, whilst you can get external hard drives, really the larger the hard drive of your DJ laptop the more storage space you have for your msuic and programs.

Next you want to look at processing power- this is the pentium processor, go for the top spec. Also have a look at the RAM or random access memory, for DJ laptops you want to have one that is at around 2 GB, this is critical as this determinse how smoothly your dj software runs and certainly if you’re going to Dj music with a Laptop at a DJ gig, you don’t want your software to crash mid set.

Now that you have whittled down the number of Laptops open to you you can start thinking about look and operating system. there are two main operating system for you to choose from, MAc and PC windows, personally I reckon Mac is better and the software is designed to cope with media heavy applications, however Windows PC are cheaper and have a larger variety of programs available, really it depends what you are more comfortable using…go for a Mac, when it comes to looks its really up to you, but you’ll want to think about somthing thats sturdy and able to take a few knocks.

DJing its all about honey’s and after parties, I mean think about it, you’re the DJ, you’re the one playing the Music, i.e. you’re working for everyone else’s benefit, not surprising really that lots of Djs get disillusioned with being a DJ.

One of the big things about DJing thats a bit poo is the traveling, if you’re eager to break in to the DJ circuit, you’re gonna have to travel, theres no real work around this one, but traveling is part and parcel with being a DJ, even more so of you only DJ a certain niche genre of music. Most DJs start out as mobile DJs or DJ at various clubs on the circuit, some might be lucky enough to travel abroad and get gigs in clubs in other countries.

If you’re going to DJ and travel, you’re going to have to think about what you need to take with you, consider teh equipment, the type of music and spare equipment in case of any breakage. Try and take advantage of the driving time by playing you set on the car stereo. Get loads of rest before you head out and pack your equipment away properly making sure sensitive equipment is well padded and securly in place. Make sure you know where you are going to DJ and how to get there. Pack spare clothes (seriously clean underwear..life saver), drink loads of water especially if you are traveling abroad for a gig.

heres a list of pointers to bear in mind when traveling as a DJ.

take a good and varied selection of music

learn and get to know your various sets

make sure you have the contact details for any clubs you are going to DJ at

remember to take any promo material you have, as a DJ you’re always promoting so bring mix CDs, business cards and flyers of your next DJ gig

if you get the chance scout out venues and preceeding DJs

get to your gig early

get loads of sleep before you travel

remember to keep your loved ones in the loop about where you’re heading

make sure you get yourtravel documents in order before hand.

take spares of anything that is fragile - headphones, needles, slipmats

make sure you pack your equipment properly, make sure your Dj equipment is well padded and secure before you travel

bring spare cloathing (don’t tell me I didn’t warn you)

Get a Pacemaker and pratice your gig before you get to your venue.

If you Dj, then the chances are you’ll have come accross Laptop DJing, this is a far more flexible way to DJ, with special DJ programs aready out there to help you DJ music on the go, via a Laptop, whilst the Pacemaker offer you plenty of functionality and portability, it only offers you the freedom to DJ across two channels and with a limited amount of effects and variations, if you’re using a Pacemaker to DJ music than you’ll already have a laptop, and indeed a simple DJ program installed - the Pacemaker Editor. There are literally dozens of Laptop DJ programs out there as it is and choosing a Laptop DJ program is easy considering most of these laptop DJ programs offer free trials, this means you can try these Dj programs and choose the one that suits your style of DJing before you commit to buying one.

The benefit of laptop DJing is that you can carry your entire catalogue of music with you AND have all the tools to make some truely unique mixes without haveing to compromise on protability, in this sense you benefit from being able to make multiple loops, use squencers along side mixers, haev stand alone effects programs, and in some cases you can even add normal decks and mixers to control whats happening on the laptop, for any DJ this gives far more flexiblity and functionality that wouldn’t have been possible even a few years ago, and you can now see DJs literally producing live on stage.

Today saw me taking a rather long road trip from one end of the UK to Wales, naturally I was with a few DJ friends and the Pacemaker was road tested, on the road.

The two DJs I was with were both experienced professional DJs, one as a mobile DJ and the other as a Club DJ for a few clubs in London, both were impressed by the size and ease of use presented by the Pacemaker when DJing music. Seeing as all three of us were pretty geeky when it comes to technology, we also had an iPhone and various other accessories to play music via a car sound system.

Setting up the Pacemaker with the line out going to the car sound system, and headphones on my head, we then put the Pacemaker through its Paces, considering were going at around 70 down a dual carriage way, the sound quality and ease of use became apparent even to the two DJs who’d never touched the unit before.

suffice to day, compared with the iPhone, the sound quality is fantastic, the fact that you can use it on the in-car stereo again add to its portability and functionality. Being also a bit of a car fanatic, we could see the raise in car park raves or rave at highway lay-bys. check out the Pacemaker here.

You can find the first Pacemaker Control article here.

In the first article we had a look a the basic controls for the Pacemaker Portable DJ device. Being an all in one DJ unit with two channels, a cross fader and the software to support high, mid and low EQ variation on each channel, four sound effects on each channel, head phone monitoring and pitch control on each channel, the Pacemaker is extreamly versitile as far as DJ units of this size go, and when you compare it to an iPod or any other MP3 player you are leaps and bounds ahead in terms of control over music and actually DJ usefulness.

The Pacemaker, as a result, does as a result require you to learn and get used to the controls. So, here is the next step in our look at the Pacemaker controls.

Search and set cue points
on the channel you want to select a cue point on, press pause at the point you want to start, use the fast forward and rewind button for a wider search, and use the touch pad for a finer search, press the cue button to set the cue point.

Adjusting BPM and beatmatching on the Pacemaker
Once the cue point has been selected, shift the P-button upwards to and rotate upwards on the edge of the Pacemaker touch pad to increase the BPM, rotate downwards on the Pacemaker touch pad to lower the BPM. rotating upwards or downwards on the Pacemaker touch pad will pitch bend, temporarily adjusting the pitch of the music when you DJ.

Adjusting EQ and gain
selecte the channel, the from the center of the Pacemaker touch pad, draw your finger north south east or west to activate the control of either the high, mid, low EQs or gain.

I guess its to be expected that a new product with the level of innovation and ground breaking technology in it as the Pacemaker portable DJ device, will naturally have some glitches and bugs.

I was thinking about it an essentially the Premier edition of the Unit i.e. the Pacemaker batch the went out with the collectors number etched on the back, is essentialy a beta launch of the Pacemaker, and a lot of the glitches and bugs are being fixed through live DJs actually using it.

From my personal experience I haven’t had any challenges, however, looking on the Pacemaker forum, it seems some DJs are getting frustrated with DJing music on the pacemaker.

The only glitches I’ve had with the Pacemaker, are 1 upgrading the firmware for the actual Pacemaker Unit, 2. getting the beatmatching to sync, the BPM varies throughout a track with no consistency, 3. duplicate tracks on the Pacemaker unit, and the editor, which with a music libary like mine means about 4 hours of trying to de duplicate the entire list everytime the Pacemaker gets connected.

Whilst its frustrating for now, I’m hoping that this gets sorted by coming upgrades.

If reading my previous posts on the Pacemaker portable DJ device haven’t convinced you enough that the Pacemaker is the future in DJing music. Here’s a list of reasons why, not having a Pacemaker DJ Device will lead to depression and misery.

1. the Pacemaker will become collectible- just look at how much an Atari is worth, you’ll bet the Pacemaker will be worth something when your deaf old and wrinkly.

2. the pacemaker is the ONLY MP3 player SPECIFICALLY designed for DJs and mixing music.

3. the Pacemaker lets you DJ music virtually any where, which means…you can party anywhere!

4. the Pacemaker community rocks and you can spread your mix to the rest of the world and build you name as a DJ.

5. the Pacemaker is still very new, and only a handful of people have it, making it the must have item of the year for you gadget freaks.

6. considering you can beat match, mix, add effects, control EQ and store music on the Pacemaker, you can pretty much use it as your primary mixing platform, ie when you go to a gig, you could rock up with the PSP size DJ device and start playing almost instantly.

7. You can make your commute a whole lot more interesting, and if you go on a road trip, you can DJ with the Pacemaker right in your car..assuming you’re not the one driving.

8. the Pacemaker is a device that will change the way DJs mix, and could look to create new and interesting mixes, when you consider the full potential of the mixing controls, theres a whole range of new mixing opportunities.

9. The Pacemaker is one of those cool things that everyone wants, like an iPhone, a Farrari or a 72 inch plasma TV that pours your drinks, suffice to say, put simply…its a chick magnet, at least as far as the girls looking over my shoulder on the tube are to go my.

Altering the EQ of a channel, has interesting effects on the music being played out and effectively helps to create a unique sound that a DJ can use to make his set more interesting and creative, playing with the EQ controls allows a DJ to annunciate certain elements of a track or hide other elements, when used on one channel during a mix, the effects can help to blend the mix allowing the two tracks to merge more smoothly.

There are usually 3 EQs, on most DJ mixers, however specialist mixers may have more, and have an additional control called a kill switch that will cut out all sound for that EQ range.

Put simply there is no real way to learn how to use EQ, its simply a case of trial and error. However an understanding of how EQ works will give any DJ a better understanding of its impact on DJ music.

Essentially, each EQ controls a given range of frequencies, each EQ control effectively acts as a filter that the music passes through, enhancing or removing frequencies in the music. a DJ can thus use the EQ controls to enhance his set vocabulary making it more expressive and interesting for the audience.

in general some EQ effects that have really cool results on the music are as follows:

with vocals- max out the mid, cut out the bass and high

with heavy bass- max out the bass cut everything else

with intros- max out the high cut the rest

one good trick to use when mixing is to cut out the bass EQ on the out going track and bring in the Bass EQ from the incoming track, effectively replacing the Bass EQ, its useful especially if you’re not too great with beatmatching.

Two sites in particular now offer this service: mp3tunes.com, and jukefly.com, the benefits of this are that no matter what computer you’re on or where you are, so long as there’s an internet connection you can play DJ music to your hearts content.

After playing on my Pacemaker, I’ve actually been really chuffed with it and its replaced my iPod as my MP3 player of choice, I still find the major challenge being beatmatching with it, but other than that, its all good.

considering my regular and constant use, i’ve found that the printed information on the back of the Pacemaker portable DJ device has started to come off, and whilst its not too bad, I still want to keep the Pacemaker in fairly good condition, as such, I’ve been hunting around for a Pacemaker case of some sort. having looked at the size of the pacemaker and condidered my options, i went looking for a case, I tried an iPod sock and a black aero PSP case, before settling for an official PSP case, the Pacemaker fit quite snugly, in the case, I was actually quite surprised how exact the fit was to a PSP, however the thickness of the case was a little poo, the reason for the thickness was due to the PSP case having space for the game cartridges. It would be cool to see the Pacemaker have its very own case, but till them this one is a good and safe alternative.

(more pacemaker articles by DJ music here)
